"The cause of all our personal problems and nearly all the problems of the world can be summed up in a single sentence:

Human life is very deep, and our modern dominant lifestyle is not."

-Bo Lozoff

Who We Are

Headquartered in Central North Carolina, Human Kindness Foundation is run by an all-volunteer board of directors, and depends heavily on volunteers for its weekly operations.

Volunteering at Human Kindness Foundation

volunteerHKF depends upon volunteers to continue its work. Some volunteer several hours each week, others come once a month. A typical work day may involve office work such as data entry, packaging of books & tapes, or working directly with prisoner mail. We currently send out thousands of books and tapes to prisoners each month. If you are interested in volunteering with us, and would like to know more about volunteer opportunities, please contact us.

Meet the HKF Board:

Currently, four members serve on the Human Kindness Foundation BOD.

Pam Clarke learned about the Human Kindness Foundation through her own family’s circumstances. In 1991, her son James was convicted of murder and received a 45-year sentence. James received a copy of We’re All Doing Time in 1999, and Pam watched as his life was transformed by it. In 2004, Pam moved to North Carolina to work more closely with HKF. Pam currently works in the Durham area as an accountant and volunteers weekly at HKF, in addition to her Board duties.

Sita Lozoff is Co-Director of Human Kindness Foundation. Along with Bo, she has been part of the Prison-Ashram Project since its beginning in 1973. You can see more about her life and prison work here. Sita continues to work in the HKF office with great joy and gratitude.

John Collins received HKF literature and tapes while incarcerated, and credits these works, as well as later personal interactions with Bo, Sita and HKF staff and volunteers, as being a major part of his transformation and recovery. John currently works as a CAD designer in an engineering firm and is deeply involved as a volunteer at the prison he was released from in 2006.

Mike Thumm is the retired Superintendent of Orange Correctional Center, a minimum custody facility in Hillsborough, NC. With over thirty years experience in the field, Mike found Bo's books through his work experience and was astounded to discover that HFK was just miles away from his prison. Once while sitting on a disciplinary committee at the supermax seg and hearing the desperation of some of the inmates' stories he asked staff to add Bo's books to their library cart. Although retired, he still serves on the Alamance/Orange Prison Ministry Board that serves the prison where he used to work.
